We are seeking to fill our part-time paid Education Coordinator Position by early July!

Sustainable Seattle needs your help in finding a creative, passionate, and committed person who will be a wonderful fit for our part-time Education Program Coordinator role.

The position is for the 2008/2009 school year

Education Program Coordinator Job Description

Application submission date: June 24, 2008

Position Role and Responsibilities:

The Education Program Coordinator at Sustainable Seattle is responsible for the management and implementation of our Choose to Change sustainability education program funded by a grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology.

The Choose to Change program features a two day workshop that examines the link between consumption and waste, and how current trends have unsustainable implications for the environment and the economy.  In addition to the workshop, the program also offers funding opportunities for post-workshop classroom projects that address this and similar problems, encouraging students to adopt conscientious consumer behavior.

This position is a wonderful opportunity for developing or sharpening transferable skills including coordinating volunteers, managing a project to budget, outreach and marketing, public speaking, and classroom teaching.

The Education Program Coordinator will:

Contact and coordinate with teachers to schedule workshops for the 2008-2009 school year, targeting especially those teachers who have an expressed interest in completing a Post-Workshop Project with their class(es).

  • Contact, train and coordinate volunteers to assist with implementing workshops and Post-Workshop Projects.
  • Present the workshop to students in middle- and high-school classrooms. The Education Coordinator will give a 15-minute presentation and lead a discussion with students, examining the connection between solid waste and every-day consumption. He or she will lead students, with the help of volunteer assistant educators, through a series of activity stations to reinforce this connection and other concepts.
  • Record numerical and qualitative data from workshops to communicate project progress to the Department of Ecology in monthly reports.
  • Use organizational, communication and leadership skills to ensure the program progresses on schedule, meeting goals within the prescribed budget.
  • Exercise good judgment and flexibility to continually evaluate program strengths and weaknesses, adjusting personnel requirements, resource allocation and workshop content as needed.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have:

  • An undergraduate degree or higher with preparation for primary or secondary education and an interest in sustainability issues.
  • Experience teaching or working with children and teenagers.
  • Good classroom management skills and comfort speaking in front of different age groups.
  • A positive and resilient attitude, the ability to work independently and a willingness to be flexible.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers and working with a wide range of people, both children and adults.
  • The ability to take initiatives to continually improve the program.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • The ability to travel to different schools and community centers within King County and carry project materials (a laptop and projector) to the various sites.

Compensation:

This is a short-term, part-time position paying $18/hr, beginning July 14 2008, ending in June, 2009.  Hours per week vary, ranging between 15-30 hrs/wk depending on workshop scheduling. The Education Coordinator can expect to work an average of 22 hrs/wk for 11 months.  Benefits are not included.
