The Fascinating World of Trash
A couple of months ago I went into a frenzy, clean out the basement, closets, garage, and junk pile out back. A few things could and did go right in to the landfill bin where Waste Management took it from there. It was actually a surprisingly small amount of actual trash, though.
The rest of the goodies went to a number of different places. Clothing, bedding, and furniture went to my favorite reseller, Value Village. They won’t take electronics, so off the old printers, monitors, and fluorescent lights went to Total Reclaim in south Seattle. Now that’s a sight to see. Piles and piles of electronic equipment being carted from one end of the warehouse to the other by speedy forklift drivers.
If I had had any mattresses, which I didn’t, I would have taken them to Spring Back Recycling, a great award nominee from 2014 that recycles nearly 100% of every mattress they receive.
The bottom line is that we have an amazing ecosystem of recyclers here in the Seattle region. Most areas of the country envy our recycling culture and the businesses it supports. Next time you get the cleaning bug, finding the next place for your old stuff is just a browser search away.
