For over ten years, the Sustainability Leadership Awards have assembled local experts, community members, and multiple sectors to recognize the work and efforts of the region’s leaders.

We Seattlites share a unique and special relationship with the environment. This year, we intend to bring the power of movement-making into the gala setting by introducing a playful, immersive event theme:

Campfire Stories is about strengthening individuals so they can strengthen their communities.

For millenia around the world, communities have come together around the life giving warmth of the campfire to share stories for their survival and their resilience. The Campfire Stories theme is playful and poetic, inviting and igniting.

For this event, we transform our venue into a beautiful indoor campground and come together – both literally and figuratively – around the campfire to dig into our shared appreciation and necessary stewardship of our region’s rich environmental, social, and economic resources. Get ready to bust out your flannel and cozy up with friends old and new!

You can expect an evening filled with regional game-changers, storytelling, live music, art, food, drinks, a silent auction, friends, dancing, and of course, inspiration. We promise a dynamic, interactive evening where we’ll flip the script on the traditional awards ceremony by forging  intimate, meaningful connections with Seattle’s brightest sustainability thinkers and practitioners, and with one another.

We strip down the pomp and circumstance and gather around the symbolic campfire to practice one of the most enduring and powerful human practices: sharing our stories.

*Thanks to our friends at Campfire in St Louis who shared their beautifully constructed method with us!

About the artwork:
“Campfire Stories” artwork created by Saiyare Refaei, from interviews with participating members in the 2019 Sustainability Leadership Awards: Campfire Stories. The image features themes of water and the Duwamish River prior to human intervention; biophilic symbolism of ferns, fungi, and dandelions as representations of emergent practice and resilience; intergenerational connection; prosperity; and civic engagement.
