DESIGNING COMPELLING PUBLIC PLACES
We're looking forward to seeing you at the 13th event in our 2005 Urban Sustainability Forum on November 17, when we will begin exploring our long-term vision for Seattle's open spaces. Mark Childs, Professor, School of Architecture and Planning, University of New Mexico, will discuss how public places can be designed to serve as centers of joyful celebration, heartbroken communion, civic discussion, or ... for simply hanging out! Childs works with designers, planners, public officials, students, developers and community leaders to design compelling public places by understanding the history and theories of public commons, and encouraging community dialogue and expressions of desires. An architect and Senior Fulbright Scholar, Childs is the author of
Squares: A Public Place Design Guide for Urbanists and Parking Spaces. Childs has worked on building designs and community plans throughout the west and won awards for design, teaching, public art, heritage preservation, and poetry.
