The Local Food Economy Workshop

Document Actions
A growing number of people are committed to building a healthy local food economy. This is not a simple or easy task. Even if we can get the general public to recognize the environmental and health benefits of eating locally, many still think it’s too expensive an option. But what if we can show that “buying local” is the way to economic success? With your help, Sustainable Seattle is looking to do just this through a Local Multiplier Project focusing on the food industry in the Seattle region. A local multiplier measures the benefits of dollars spent locally through subsequent local purchases. The larger the local multiplier, the more dollars there are circulating locally, and the greater the number of local economic linkages (e.g. connections between farms, distributors, food processors, restaurants, final consumers and so forth). More linkages in turn suggest a more healthy, robust, resilient and sustainable local economy. The multiplier will show that buying local matters – for the environment, our health, and the local economy! To make certain we succeed with this project, we are inviting you to attend an important workshop where we will set the agenda for this work. There will be growers, grocers, restaurateurs, distributors and processors and a chance to network. Please RSVP today that you will be able to attend! We look forward to hearing and acting on your ideas for localizing the food economy. The Yesler Community Center is at 917 East Yesler Way in Seattle - for directions, check http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/centers/Yesler/directions.htm There is free parking behind the center
