Planning and the Ethic of Sustainability

Document Actions
Please join panelists Dr. Scott Campbell from the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning; Dr. Bob Mugerauer, Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning; Dr. Kristina Hill from the University of Washington, Department of Landscape Architecture; Dr. Marina Alberti from the University of Washington, Department of Urban Design and Planning; and Richard Gelb, of the City of Seattle's Office of Sustainability and Environment, as they explore the ethic of sustainability, and how, if taken seriously, it would change the job of the community designers and planners. How do community design professionals, who typically work at scales in which sustainability is difficult to read, fit into the broader context of a sustainable approach to development? If a sustainable approach to development/consumption is dependent upon shifting cultural norms, what is a realistic role for planners and designers in furthering that shift? This event is co-sponsored by the Northwest Center For Livable Communities and FOCUS (Forum On Conservation and Urban Sustainability). The public, professional, and academic communities are all welcome, and the event is free of charge. Please join us for what promises to be an engaging discussion on one of today's widely used and often referred to concepts, with which we are only beginning to critically engage.
