Get RainWise with Your Neighbors in the Northeast!

When: May 13 at 6:30pm, Doors open at 6pm

Where: Center for Spiritual Living, 5801 Sand Point Way NE

Neighbors in Ravenna, Bryant, Laurelhurst, and Windermere neighborhoods are getting reimbursements from Seattle Public Utilities for installing beautiful and functional landscape features in their yard! Learn the steps to installing a RainWise rain garden or cistern, hear why homeowners in Ballard and Northeast Seattle decided to go RainWise, and have a chance to talk to the contractors that install rain gardens!

Brian Allen

Brian Allen is the Founder and Principal of the Appropriate Technology Group, a Seattle-based consultancy focused on sustainable approaches to using technology for economic development and environmental protection. He has lived and worked across the Americas and Europe for a wide range of businesses and non-profits over the last 30 years. In Washington State, he has founded or served on the boards of Sustainable West Seattle. the Green Party of Washington State, Washington Alpine Club, Seattle Astronomical Society, The Backbone Campaign, The Washington Alliance of Technology Workers, Seattle Independent Media Center, Northwest Ecobuilding Guild, Green Party of Seattle, and the Puget Sound Beekeepers Association, among others. He earned a BA in Political Science & International Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Certificat d’Études Politiques from the Institute d’Études Politiques in Aix-en-Provence, France, and an MA in Economics & Latin American Studies from The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International

The Seattle Area Happiness Initiative

The Happiness Initiative is a national project offering tools and resources to communities and individuals seeking to enhance their well-being. The mission of the Happiness Initiative is to work for a just, healthy and resilient society where all people have the opportunity to pursue happiness. The Seattle Area Happiness Initiative is a local happiness initiative that uses the tools and resources developed and provided by The Happiness Initiative.

How happy are we? Over 7,200 people took the survey between Jan. and July 2011; 2,400 from the Seattle area. Download the Seattle Happiness Report Card Now!

Volunteering at Sustainable Seattle is a great way to get involved in your community, gain some experience in sustainability and work with wonderful people on challenging, fun and rewarding programs and projects. Sustainable Seattle’s volunteers are tomorrow leaders in sustainability. We always have the need for volunteers to work on our programs and projects.

Volunteer Opportunities:

2013 Earth Day 5K race with Seattle Magazine! Join Sustainable Seattle's volunteer team at Seattle Magazine's first Earth Day 5K! We've teamed up to support this event whose proceeds benefit Green Seattle Partnership to help restore our urban parks and forests. We're looking for volunteers to join us at Bell Harbor Pierr 66 on Saturday, April 20. Volunteers will receive a free T-Shirt! Shifts begin at 7am and end at 1pm.

Greening Highland Park Improvement Club

Sustainable Seattle is excited to be a part of the greening project at Highland Park Improvement Club! This is part of Sustainable Seattle's broader Green Blocks Blue Sound program. With funding support from a King County Lower Duwamish Air and Water Quality Improvement Grants, Sustainable Seattle is working with HPIC and the broader community to design and install rain gardens, cisterns and other forms of green infrastructure on the club's property. These features will beautify the property and help prevent polluted runoff from entering our local waterways!

The Greening team chose a contractor! Rain Dog Designs will be designing and installing the rain garden and cistern on the Highland Park property. On March 27, the team will present preliminary designs during the Highland Park Action Committee meeting. Following the presentation, we will post the design here.

The project will also serve as a demonstration site and educational opportunity for the surrounding neighbors. The community is encouraged to take an active part in this project and learn about they can have an impact at home!
