Sustainable Rain:

A collaborative project by Sustainable Seattle, Stewardship Partners, Alleycat Acres, Homegrown Organics & Creatives For Community.

Sustainable Seattle in collaboration with Alleycat Acres and Creatives 4 Community created a two-part project intended to inspire actions  individual homeowners and residents can take to lower their negative impact on the Puget Sound watershed with low or no cost projects. In part one of this project, Alleycat Acres in conjunction with Creatives 4 Community and Sustainable Seattle targeted the greater Duwamish region for the installation on the Rain Garden.  We installed the garden in an underserved neighborhood that elicited an unplanned for response from the neighborhood. When we were soliciting homeowners and local businesses to install a Rain Garden in their homes, we got an overwhelming response.  We chose the location because of its location: it is on a steep hill and it is in an under-served community. The location so provides education because of its location on a hill, its proximity to neighbors who do not have rain gardens demonstrate the need for such, it is accessible to neighbors.

The installation was a two-part process that involved soil consultation and then construction.  Alleycat Acres inspected the site finding it perfect for installation and then created the rain garden while the neighbors watched and we took video for you-tube.

The second part of the project was in a training-the-trainer session put together by Sustainable Seattle and Creatives 4 Community. Trainers were provided information on how to present and materials for their use in creating materials and presentations on the importance of the watershed and how individual homeowners and residents have a major impact on the Sound
