Six Honored for Promoting Sustainability" - Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce, March 25, 2003.

Congratulations to the 2002 Award Recipients!

Board of Directors Special Achievement Award
Jones & Jones Architects & Landscape Architects, LTD - Our goal with the Special Achievement Award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments of an individual or organization that may not fit neatly into one of our five categories or that stands out due to a long-term nature or special commitment to furthering our core principles of sustainability.

Built Environment
Kathleen O'Brien, President of O'Brien & Company - This award category is meant to highlight the "sea change" that is happening with the design, construction and building industry today. Never before have these professions experienced such a dramatic shift beyond short-term architectural trends or styles. We seek to recognize individuals who have made an exceptional contribution towards changing the way we use resources in building our physical structures.

Business
RE Store & RE Sources - As important members of the community, businesses must play a leadership role in promoting sustainability. The business award is presented to the business in Puget Sound region that embraces the concept of a triple bottom line of business results-profitability, people and environmental stewardship and actively integrates sustainability into business practices.

Government
Karen Hamilton & Eric Nelson, Environmental Purchasing Program, King County Procurement & Contract Services - Government has a significant role in educating a broad spectrum of people about sustainability and can model the best principles it preaches by modifying government's own behavior, business practices and operational activities. We must find examples of governments that truly walk the talk.

Neighborhoods/Community
Patty Borman, representing Cascade Neighborhood Council - A principle of sustainable living is strengthening the connections that bind together a community and develop a sense of caring and belonging. Sustainable Seattle wants recognize those leaders and organizations who have made exceptional contributions to the neighborhoods in which we live.

Social Justice
James Puckett, Founder of Basel Action Network - Sustainability, to be lasting, requires the integrity of social bonds. By addressing social ills, we can develop healthy social relationships. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., "evil is perpetuated by the silence of good people". This award recognizes a person for their efforts to promote greater social equity..
