North Beacon Hill May 7, 2006 Street-Level Survey

The second North Beacon Hill street-level survey was conducted on May 7th, 2006 and focused primarily on the North Beacon Hill commercial district. The streets surveyed were: Beacon Ave S from S Spokane St northwards to 14th Ave S. Additionally 14th Ave S from Beacon Ave S to S Walker and 15th Ave S from S McClellan to S Walker.

The maps above show the six surveys planned: Asset Route 1 & Asset Route 2 & Asset Route 3 represent the positive "asset" condition routes and Deficit Route 1 & Deficit Route 2 & Deficit Route 3 represent the "deficit" condition routes. Survey volunteers included residents of the North Beacon Hill neighborhood with help from Sustainable Seattle volunteers. Findings of the May 7th, 2006 street-level survey:

Community members collected deficits & concerns (what they didn't like and what they thought were problems) along the areas of the main business district of the North Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Asset Findings:

Table 1:


Table 1 above lists the most frequently collected positive conditions (assets) organized by feature.  For example, most of the asset or opportunity incidents were found in the Tree category with 19 incidents collected of healthy trees or trees which provide nice canopy.  The second most collected category were Planting Strips conditions with 15 incidents collected.  Community members also discovered that the Crosswalks/Intersections in the neighborhood were clearly marked and included pedestrian signals.  Currently, community members have collected 139 assets in North Beacon Hill on May 7th  2006.  For a complete list of all the assets collected in the survey, click here. Deficit Findings:

Table 2:


Table 2 above lists the most frequently collected negative conditions (deficits) organized by feature.  35 sidewalk conditions were found.  A majority of the sidewalk conditions indicated uneven pavement and litter on the sidewalk.  Planting Strips were the second most frequently collected feature, 14 conditions were found in this category; the concerns were mostly litter and weeds. Tree Pits were the third collected feature, 13 incidents of the roots heaving and causing uneven pavers.  In total, there were 131 deficits or concerns collected by community members in the North Beacon Hill neighborhood on May 7th, 2006.  For a complete list of all the deficits collected during this survey, click here. Deficit Conditions Found and Sent to the City of Seattle

There are four deficit conditions which are recognized by Sustainable Seattle as priorities. These include: graffiti, potholes, large dumping and serious incidents of uneven pavement. These conditions are sent to the respective City of Seattle agency immediately after they have been collected. This pie graph summarizes the number of these priorities which were sent to the City as compared to the total number of deficit concerns collected. In the North Beacon Hill neighborhood there were a total of 131 deficit conditions collected out of which 28 were sent to the City as priorities.  For a list of the conditions sent to the City of Seattle, please click here. The City of Seattle has addressed the uneven pavement incidents sent as priorities by Sustainable Seattle.
