Chinatown-International District Street-Level Survey 2004

Document Actions
On July 29th, 2004 youth from the International District Housing Alliance's Wilderness Inner City Leadership Development (WILD) project and elders who live in the neighborhood received training and conducted the street-level survey. Despite language and cultural differences, the survey was a great success: youth gained insight into city municipal service delivery issues as well as concerns affecting the International District, and the elders appreciated being called upon to help identify problems they routinely experience.

Chinatown-ID Street-Level Survey, July 29th, 2004

The map above shows the seven individual routes the youth and elders surveyed in Chinatown-International District on July 29th, 2004.  In fact, almost the entire "downtown" core of the business district of Chinatown-ID was covered.  With 13 youth and 8 elders, the street-level survey was one of the most comprehensive ones completed so far in Seattle.

Table 1: Deficit Findings

Table 1 above lists the most frequently collected conditions organized by feature.  For example, most of the  incidents were found in the Sidewalks category with 106 incidents collected.  The second most collected category were conditions on building facades or walls with 26 incidents collected.  Community members also discovered that roadways in the neighborhood had potholes and uneven patching.  In 2004 the youth and elders collected 289 deficits.  For a complete list of all the deficits collected in the survey, click here.
