North Beacon Hill May 22, 2004 Street-Level Survey
N.Beacon Hill Street-Level Survey Routes, May 22nd, 2004
The map above shows four routes chosen by a steering committee in N. Beacon Hill. After several meetings discussing what kinds of visual indicators would be useful to collect, the group decided to survey the main business district of the neighborhood, Beacon Ave. South. However, due to insufficient volunteers on the survey day, community members decided to survey only three of the four routes.
Findings of the May 22, 2004 street-level survey:
Table 1

Table 1 summarizes the most frequently collected incidents organized by feature. Trip hazards on the sidewalk was the top problem (26) in North Beacon Hill out of 260 total incidents recorded. Surveyors found too much concrete covering up planting strips (14 “asphalt/concrete should be removed”). Litter was also a leading problem, with a total of 18 incidents recorded along planting strips. Finally, under the feature “suspicious activity”, 9 incidents of “alcoholic beverage containers” were collected, greater than any other neighborhood. Capitol Hill had 5 such incidents.
