Researching Conditions & Collecting Data

Document Actions
We work with neighborhood groups to collect indicators of community health. We conduct street-level surveys and other research to document positive and negative neighborhood conditions; we administer community surveys to better understand neighborhood health and community perceptions; and we offer an interactive mapping tool to present census-based indicators and to analyze open space accessibility at a neighborhood scale.

Street-Level Surveys

Sustainable Seattle works with community members in each of our partners neighborhoods to conduct annual street-level surveys of conditions with the aid of handheld computers and digital cameras.  These street-level data provide important clues about the basic look and feel of the community, and may indicate how well government and the community are addressing basic quality of life concerns.  To learn more about this tool, click here.

Street-Level Research

Pedestrian Counts

Sustainable Seattle recently conducted pedestrian counts at key intersections in our 10 partner neighborhoods.  These counts will be useful in understanding one important indicator of the health of the local business district - foot traffic!  This indicator was specifically requested by our steering committee focused on creating vibrant and thriving business districts.  To learn more about the findings of the counts, click here.

Community Surveys & Interviews

Sustainable Seattle recently completed a survey of 92 community members representing our 10 SUNI partner neighborhoods.  Funded through a grant from The Seattle Foundation, these one-on-one interviews help further our understanding of what matters to citizens in their local communities.  Results from the community interviews show affordable housing to be the most pressing neighborhood concern. Neighborhood Stats

Our website offers local data and information about your community through our interactive mapping tools!  This information can be used to support neighborhood planning, fundraising, or other community-based efforts to improve neighborhood health and sustainability.  To access the interactive mapping tool, click here.
