East Ballard is a unique addition to the Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods Initiative.  Unlike other neighborhoods in the program, East Ballard includes a subsection of a larger urban village, Ballard, and is in the early stages of its economic development.  This area does not have a thriving commercial district (yet) and consists of a mix of diverse uses, from large industrial, to some small restaurants and retail establishments, to institutions such as Ballard High School, and also includes single family and multi-family dwellings.  The East Ballard Community Association (EBCA) comprised of residents and landowners dedicated to improving the quality of life and work in this neighborhood are leading the effort to develop their neighborhood sustainability.  The SUNI project is one step toward making this happen.

One of the main goals of SUNI's partnership with the EBCA is to incorporate the data collected on December 3, 2005 in our street-level survey into the 14th Avenue Visioning Project.  The goal of the 14th Ave NW Visioning Project is to engage the entire community in the immediate vicinity of the boulevard in order to develop a consensus vision for safety, aesthetic, and functional improvements to the avenue.  14th Ave NW is a one-mile boulevard located in the East Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA. This boulevard runs from the ship canal of Salmon Bay to Ballard High School and is home to a wide variety of businesses and residents.  Sustainable Seattle is very excited to see how its data collection will help with the efforts of the community to prioritize and establish a criteria for sustainable development of the 14th Avenue boulevard.
