Capitol Hill

Document Actions
Capitol Hill is located between downtown Seattle and Lake Washington, and is one of five Designated Urban Centers in the city. The main business districts are located on Broadway, Pike/Pine Streets, and 15th Avenue. Capitol Hill is known for its alternative shops, cafés, inexpensive to mid range restaurants, bars, live music venues and dance clubs. Attractions in Capitol Hill include Volunteer Park, Seattle Asian Art Museum, Cornish College of the Arts, and Richard Hugo House.

Broadway's "Dancing Steps"

Capitol Hill was selected as one of the first neighborhoods in the Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods Initiative (SUNI) because of a strong interest from the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce leadership in participating in the project.  There was a particular interest in gathering data on problems occurring in the transitioning business district along Broadway, between Pike Street and Roy Street.  Specifically, the Chamber felt that rampant drug and other crime-related issues were a hindrance to future development prospects in the Broadway-Capitol Hill area. Unfortunately, a few months after the May 22nd street-level survey the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce closed its doors.  Currently, SUNI is searching for another partner on Capitol Hill.

Street Level Surveys:

May 22nd, 2004: Initial survey

2005 Follow Ups: Comparison of 2004 data to 2005 conditions

2006 Survey: date To Be Decided...  Neighborhood Partner Needed!
