Project Mission:

To move the King County region toward sustainability with compelling indicators and strategies for action.


Project Goals:

Revise and refine the Indicators of Sustainable Community

  • Draw from existing sets of indicators inside and outside the region
  • Base indicators on a broad list of regional assets (strengths & opportunities) and concerns (weaknesses & threats)
  • Use a participatory process drawing from public opinion, civic leaders’ perspectives, and experts’ knowledge

Develop strategies and actions using indicators and sustainability principles

  • Employ sustainability principles in the process
  • Use the new indicators as a basis
  • Engage civic leaders and experts in identifying several courses of action

Develop a five-year plan for implementing and tracking sustainability actions.

  • Build capacity to pursue implementation of sustainability-based plans
  • Develop public relations and marketing strategies for engaging people and organizations to implement actions
  • Identify Sustainable Seattle’s most effective role to play in driving continued implementation of sustainability actions
  • Obtain commitments from people and organizations to work beyond the schedule of this project
  • Identify resources for implementing actions
