Sustainable Seattle works to build a thriving future through initiatives that deliver environmental, economic and community benefits, promote equity, and build resilience.
We envision a thriving, regenerative, sustainable Seattle which centers reciprocity, liberation, and restored abundance.
We define sustainability as the ancient and enduring practice of creating richness in natural resources, attuning to nature’s environmental indicators, and providing equitable access to health, food, shelter, and economic wealth for all people.

30 Years of Sustainability
Sustainable Seattle was founded in 1991 by a dedicated group seeking to make sustainability work community-owned. Our UN award-winning Indicators of a Sustainable Community were emulated as a model of assessment by over 90 cities.
Equity & Intersectionality
We will achieve sustainability when access to power and influence is redistributed to the most impacted communities. We prioritize initiatives from Seattle’s frontline and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color groups to undo historic harms and effectively build vibrant community and futures.
Traditional Sustainable Values
We seek to respectfully study and embody the sustainable values defined by our colleague, Inupiaq researcher Demarus Tevuk.
Working together as an interwoven set, and to avoid appropriation, these values are best understood in their Indigenous cultural context.

Land Acknowledgement
We would like to acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional land of the Duwamish People, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, Muckleshoot, and many more Coast Salish Peoples, past and present, and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Coast Salish Tribes.
Sustainable Seattle encourages Seattle residents to support Duwamish Tribal Services by paying real rent to Real Rent Duwamish.
